What an absolute gem of a tea shop in downtown York! It felt like visiting my nana for tea and cookies. The owner, Miss Mary, is friendly and genuine. The homemade cookies and tea were delicious and very affordable. I've found my new lunch spot!

For the last few years our Christmas tradition has been to have a ladies tea. We like being able to dress up a little bit and enjoy the different flavors of tea and the delicate little sandwiches and variety of desserts at some of the local tea houses. Every year we try a different spot and this year our choice was Coffee, Tea and Thee.
This is a modest little tea shop in a quaint old house. The fun variety of vintage dishes and the cclectic decorations really make this a cozy spot. There were no teas for sale or other merchandise that really went with the tea theme, but that was okay. The afternoon tea price was very reasonable, less than $25 per person including desert and a bowl of soup. (And by a bowl of soup, I mean a BOWL of soup...they were generous portions. Mom had the tomato bisque and I had the Italian wedding soup. The meatballs were tender and full of flavor.).
Our meal started with hot scones and muffins. They were a nice starter. We had salads that were simple but had slices of orange that really brightened it up.
As mentioned above, the bowls of soup were large and tasty. The sandwiches were simple, little white, wheat or raisin bread with crusts cut off, filled with chicken salad, pimento cheese, egg salad or cream cheese and pickled cucumber. The tea was hot and served in pot with a cozy. They don't have the enormous selection of flavors other local houses but they covered a good variety.
One disappointing part of the meal was dessert. We were given some options to choose from like a cup of ice cream or an apple caramel muffin, but in our past experiences when having an afternoon tea the diners are brought a variety of small dessert options and I know all of us were really looking forward to seeing what was on offer. The apple caramel muffin was fine, nothing outstanding.
Coffee Tea and Thee is a small little place on a side street that would be difficult to find if it weren't for the sign at the corner. It looks like at one point it was a lovely little old home. The last business there was a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center as far as the owner of the tea place told us. The owner's name is Mary, and she is sweet and friendly and very very religious. She spent a good 15 minutes or more sitting at our table telling us the story of the tea shop. (We did tell her it was okay to share the story with us, not knowing it was going to be quite so long a tale.) She also offered to pray with us and give a blessing.
One small strange thing about this location is the bathroom situation. Because this was a house, the bathroom is only accessible by going outside and around the building. Otherwise you would have to go through the kitchen in order to get to the bathroom and obviously in a restaurant you can't do that.
Once you brave the cold and get into the small bathroom, though, it is absolutely charming, clean, kitschy and cute.
With the reasonable price, and the good food, afternoon tea is definitely worth it and we may be back in the future.
